Mahish-Asura Mardini

Durga Puja (or Dashera) always brings back some of the best memories of my life, and the story of Mother Durga's victory over the shapeshifting demon Mahishasura remains one of my favorite mythological tales. Here’s my recollection:

Mahishasura, a shape shifting demon through his prayers to Brahma (the creator) gets the blessing that he could not be destroyed/killed by any ‘Man or God’. As soon as he gets this boon, he begins his conquest of the worlds and destroys all in his path that oppose him. The Gods retreat to the mountains and ask Brahma for help. Durga is approached to help and is empowered by all Gods with their weapons (strengths/power) to fight the undefeated. Armed, she proceeds to the battle field.

Mahishasura hears about her radiance and beauty and sends her a note about how powerful he is and claims her to be his bride. She declines and challenges him to a fight and promises marriage only if she is defeated. The egoistic demon only sees a beautiful woman and not the warrior inside her and accepts.

After 9 days of fierce battle that Mahishasura fights with deceit, Durga is victorious.

Bijoy Dashmi (Dushera) is the celebration that follows her victory.

It’s a powerful coincidence that this year Bijoya followed right after Mental Health Day. Durga's victory can be seen as a metaphor for conquering our inner demons—those battles we often fight within ourselves, which can take many forms. Just like Durga was empowered by the gods with their strengths, when facing our own struggles, seeking support and gathering strength from others can lead to wins.

Wishing you all inner strength, resilience, and the power of a supportive community. Shubho Bijoya! 🙏
